Veneto

Housed in the north-east of Italy, the region of Veneto once hosted the reknown Venetian Republic, an independent republic until the 16th Century.

Located between the Italian Alps as well as the Adriatic Sea, the region’s climate ranges from continental to milder and sunnier weather as one moves closer to the seaside. The rivers Po, Adige, Brenta and Piave traverse the region.

Today the region is known as one of the most affluent and industrialized in the country, with its citizens speaking the the regional Venetian and Ladin tongues aside from the national language of Italian.

The Veneto region welcomes close to 60 million visitors annuallt, with its UNESCO heritage sites. Its capital city is the romantic water-loving city of Venice, home to kissing bridges, lagoons and the gondolas that travel through its waterways as well as the famed Byzantine churches on St. Mark’s square as well as the Cathedrall of Torcello.

The home of Shakespeare’s doomed young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, is also in this region. Verona is one of the cities that has better preserved its artistic heritage in Italy bearing the distinction as a UNESCO world heritage site, such as its Roman arena dating back to an ancient era.

Also known as “City of the Saint,” Padua is home to the Scrovegni Chapel with the artist Giotto’s painstaking and breathtaking frescoes and the Orto botanico di Padova, the continent’s oldest botanical garden also on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to Lake Garda and its picturesque resorts of Lazise, Cisano, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco and Malcesine, which offer mild climate for a lakeside getaway. Further north is the exlusive mountain retreat town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, where guests can enjoy the robust mountain air, with heart snacks of meat sandwiches filled with sopressa vicentina (an aged pork salami) and prosciutto veneto berico-euganeo (a cured pork whose delicate aroma is sweet and fragrant).
