Taormina
The charming hillside town of Taormina on the eastern coast of the Sicilian region in Italy is a dazzling spectacle of sand and surf.
This formerly Greek colony from the 400 Century BC lies suspended between blue skies and mesmerizing sea, is nestled among a cascading hillside accesible via the highways from to the north and south. The city is approximately a forty-five minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.
Visitors both local and international are drawn to Taormina throughout all periods of the year to admire the gorgeous sun-kissed beaches, antique monuments, beautiful gardens and famous cuisine.
By every beach even during winter time one can enjoy water sports such as wind-surfing, sailing, fishing, scuba-diving, among others. For those wanting adventures closer to the land, there’s the Picciolo Golf club, an 18 holes green village of Castiglione di Sicilia half an hour of away, where players tee off on top of a volcano. To the south of the town is the Isola Bella, a stunning nature reserve open the public.
The impressive open-air theatre, with great views up and down the coast and across to Mount Etna is the Teatro Greco.The second largest of its kind in Sicily was rebuilt on the foundations of an original theatre in the 2nd Century BC by the Romans for public entertainment.
Until today, the Teatro Greco is frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances and for concerts. The David di Donatello Taormina Film Festival has been held for over fifty years, with international film stars viewing films on a screen erected in the Greek theatre.
