Sardinia

An island between Spain, Tunisia and Corsica, Sardinia is an autonomous region in Italy that lies in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.

Of an ancient origin, the island was known in the 1500 BC as Ichnusa by the Mycenaeans.
It is no surprise that the island paradise is a Mediterranean getaway—with its warm and dry summers felt in the plains below and cooler rains in the winter, particularly in the mountains.
The main capital of the island is Cagliari, with the surrounding cities: Nuoro (Nugoro in the local Sardinian language), Olbia, Oristano, and Sassari. Most locals speak the standard Italian but also a rich dialect of Sardinian with its close ties to Latin.

Guests are invited to visit the medieval town of Alghero, a charming stone village that seems to have been frozen in the middle ages, with cross cultural influences from particularly that of the Catalan culture in nearby Spain. There is also another breathtaking medieval town called Bosa on the island.
There are many sights that abound both offering options for the adventurous lover of the wild and ancient—such as the Punic and Roman archeological sites of Pula and Tharros and the natural wilderness of the Barbagia and Ogliastra areas.

For water-loving travellers there is the tiny fishing village of Stintino on the north-west of the island whose beach, called La Pelosa, is reknown for its fine coasts. Scuba divers will thrive in the pristine waters of Tavolara Island, while sun-worshippers will indulge in the soothing waves of the acclaimed seaside resort, San Teodoro as well as the beaches of Costa Smeralda. The more adventurous water sports enthusiast will love the local haven for wind and kitesurfing at Isola dei Gabbiani. While those wanting a quiet morning jaunt within the Santa Barbara cove and the Sardinian miners at Iglesias and the Sulcis.
