Puglia

The low coast of Puglia or Apulia is broken by the mountainous Gargano Peninsula in the north.
In the southeast corner of the Italian coast bounded by the waters of the Adriatic to the east, the Gulf of Taranto to the South. Fishing is pursued in the Adriatic and in the Gulf of Taranto. As such, the region is just a sea away from neighbors Greece and Albania.

Its capital, Bari with its famed old town, is one of five provinces in the region including Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce and Taranto. Its southern portion known as Salento, a peninsula, forms the heel of the Italian boot.

Visitors are encouraged to note the trulli style of homes shaped like cone-shaped tents made of stone from the area. Most of these homes are located in Alberobello and form a picturesque and rustic haven for travellers seeking to experience peasant life. There history of these stone dwellings stretch back to the past with Canne della Battaglia and Ignazia as two great archaeological ruins, and megaliths, man-made caves abound.
The perfect geometry of the imposing thick stone walls of the Castel del Monte invites visitors. While the natural stalagmites and stalactites for nature enthusiasts can be visited in nearby caves.

The region still continues to produce olives, grapes, cereals, almonds, figs, tobacco, and livestock (sheep, pigs, cattle, and goats) asd well as has a thriving fishing industry. The fish market at Taranto for example is known for the fresh catch smelling of brine and sea.
