Bardonecchia
The town of Bardonecchia in the Piedmont region of Italy is the famed snow sport capital, recently hosting all snowboarding divisions for the 2006 global Winter Olympic games.
Hugging the French border, the town is found in a sun-lit valley called Alta Val di Susa (Susa Valley) in the Italian Alps. Located about 90 km from the regional capital of Turin, the town is built along Bardonecchia Stream, a tributary of the Dora Riparia. This charming town is also connected to France by the Fréjus Road Tunnel and by a railroad tunnel, part of a TGV Paris to Milan connection.
At an altitude of 1312 metres, its wooded pine landscapes and mountain views inspire a vibrant Italian hamlet as well the intimacy of a ski resort community. It is no wonder that this town is a secret weekend getaway among locals, seeking to escape to its pristine slopes.
Composed of six different villages, the locale has something for everyone, namely the Fregiusia, Les Arnaus, Melezet, Millaures, Rochemolles and Pian del Sole. Four different ski areas cater to the variety of winter sports enthusiasts, the Campo Smith-Colomion, Les Arnauds, Mélezet-valle Stretta and Fregiusia-Jafferau. Linked by 27 chair lifts, these four ski areas combine for 140 km of pistes.
The streets of Bardonecchia are bordered by both traditional and more modern architecture, with events straged in the historic town center and more recent part of the town close to its train station.
Nearby boundaries like the French Trois Vallées ski areas are easily accessible from the town giving sports enthusiasts a wide range of mountainous terrain to offer all over the Alpine range. Easily accessible for the day traveller are Valle Stretta, towards Lago Verde (the Green Lake), and the glaciers at Rochemolles.
