Molise

The breathtaking Italian region of Molise is the second smallest of the regions in the country.

Located in south central Italy, the region was once part of the Abruzzo region that it borders to the north west. Today the youngest Italian region in its establishment in the 1960’s, the region though still retains its common cultural heritage with the Abruzzo region—in artistry, cusine and ancient roots.

This land of waters brings the Apennine mountain springs unto the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas across a diverse landscape of mountain, hill and plain.

Its capital along the calm beaches fronting the Adriatic coast, Campobasso, is the more populated part of the region. Other areas owing to mountainous territory such as the Isernian province has made settling more difficult though views are stunning.

The Molisan Croatians and Albanians are ethnic to the region, speaking aside from Italian a Croatian-Dalmatian dialect and a variant of the Albanian language quite removed from Albanians across the sea.

The artistry of the Molisans are reknown, particularly in the capital city. During the day there the castles of the Longobard period and churches of San Bartolomeo and San Giorgino stand proudly for centuries as guests leisurely stroll through its narrow stone alleyways and wide piazzas.

Visitors to the crypt of San Lorenzo in San Vincenzo al Volturno can view the frescos from the 9th Century on its walls. Wooden carvings and sculpture abound within the Church of Saint Anthony, as a showcase to the artisans of Molise form the 16th Century.
