San Remo

The city of San Remo lies in the northwest of Italy on its famed Riviera, close to the French border.
Its proximity to the Maritime Alps and to the Mediterranean Sea make it of the most attractive destination on the Italian Riveria. Mild temperatures from the mountains and the sea provide a calming atmosphere conducing to retreat during the extreme warmth of summer months and cool of winters.

Such lovely climate brings another gift of flower cultivation for the city’s residents. San Remo is also known as the City of Flowers (la Cittá dei Fiori), serving the international flower market as an economic driver. In fact, even the nearby towns of Arma di Taggia, Bordighera and Ospedaletti are actively involved in the cultivation of flowers.

Every beginning of the year the port city holds a dazzling Flower Parade, as with most every city of the Italian Riviera, to present original flower compositions of flowers on floats that inspire festive carnivale atmospheres.
A colourful market, held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, can be found on the main square. The Piazza Eroi Sanremesi is very famous among the people living in the Italian and French Riviera. The municipal casino is also found in the town center, which is an architectural landmark.

Catering to the more artistic talents of the locals, the nearby Ariston Theater hosts the annual Sanremo Music Festival, a popular song contest since 1951. A national pastime, the competition is known among Italians simply as "Il Festival" (The Festival). The internationally famous song "Volare" debuted at this festival in 1958.

There are two sea port harbours of Porto Vecchio and the modern Porto Sole invite guests both from within and outside of the country. Tourist attractions in Sanremo such as a golf course and riding grounds abound, and for the more adventurous visitors there is the Sanremo Car Rally Race in the mountains every September.
