Lazio
The region of Lazio in the heart of Italy is an important center for art, history, religion and culture since the Roman civilization. Bordered by the inland regions of the country with its mountains as well as the the Tyrrhenian Sea, the region as a mixture of landscapes from the coasts, flatlands and hinterlands even dormant volcanoes.
The region’s capital is Rome, a densely populated city with more than half of the region’s inhabitants, and which serves as the country’s capital city as well, making the region truly a center in modern day commerce. It is no surprise then that many national and multinationals corporations, public and private, have their headquarters in Rome.
The immense patrimony of Rome is only a part of the real treasure that is spread over the hundreds of towns, villages, abbeys, churches, monuments and other sites of the region. As the center for civilization, it has also been the core of artistic activities since the Middle Ages, especially with the Vatican City, the seat of the papacy, located within Rome.
The National Museum, Museum of Palazzo dei Conservatori, and Capitoline Museum in Rome carries the world’s most valuable artifacts from classical periods. The Colloseum is a life-sized structure that dates back to the same period, though experienced in the outdoors of Rome, as the Roman citizens once did.
Visitors are invited to take a day trip into the city-state of the Vatican, the smallest in the world, as most pilgrims do.
With the exception of Rome, the region's economy in the cities of Frosinone, Latina,Viterbo and Rieti has been unchanged in the last decades where the traditional activities have been growing grapes for wine, olives, vegetables and fruits, crafts, fishing.
