Capri
The island paradise of Capri in the Campania region of Italia is located in the Gulf of Naples.
A celebrated resort island for leisure since the time of the ancient Roman empire, it joins two harbours—the Marina Piccola and the Marina Grande that house the yachts of the international jet-set fashionable since the 1950’s with the promenade of villas that stand out against the crystal blue waters.
The separate commune of Anacapri is located high on the hills west from the city of Capri. While the central city of Capri is a charming village with all the modern luxuries of an island resort in its piazzette, guests are encouraged to take a leisurly stroll to explore the Villa Jovis, the former home of the Roman Emperor Tiberius, the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the Cave of Tiberius and the Lighthouse Tower.
There is also the famed Grotta Azzurra or Blue Grotto, a charming natural cave located at the edge of the waters with a narrow entrance that rowboats can navigate past. On foot or on motor-scooter, one can explore the "Arco Naturale" and other beautiful sights which the large majority of tourists will only see from their boat trips around the island. Or for those not afriad of heights, there is the Monte Salaro chairlift that takes one above the orchards and vineyards for a stunning panorama.
The island is a mix of tradition and glamour, as evidenced by the slew of celebrations that attract visitors from all over the world. From April to the end of the summer, the island also comes to life from an artistic and cultural point of view. Concerts are organized almost every evening in the squares or the splendid villas built by Tiberius, as well as painting and sculpture exhibitions, plays and dance performances.
In May, the island honors its patron saint with the Festival of San Costanzol, while june celebrates the town of Anacapri’s patron saint’s day. The Settembrata Anacaprese festival is held every September to celebrate the bountiful grape harvest—with games, produce showcases, competitions for all ten days. While the more artistically inclined are invited in December to the Capri Film Festival attracting talented independent filmmakers.
