Abruzzo
The region of Abruzzo in the central part of Italy is known for its mountainous and hilly terrain bordered by the Adriatic sea on its coasts.
With the Corno Grande and Monte Amaro as its peaks, the a third of the region is a known nature preservation composed of several smaller parks such as the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise (Abruzzo National Park), Lago di Barrea (Barrea Lake Wetlands), Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga (National Park of the Gran Sasso), Parco Nazionale della Majella (National Park of the Majella) and the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino (Sirente Velino Regional Park) .
And even more stupendous are the wealth of medival villages and castles in the region perched on hilltops such as the areas close the regional center of L’Aquila its largest province. Other provincesare Chieti, Teramo and Pescara which is the center for economic activity in the region and home to the Italian Serie B team Pescara Calico.
Known for its relics from the ancient world, various cathedrals and abbeys dot the region, housing valued cultural heritage and art objects such as the Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila.
Abruzzo is no exception to the delicious cusine of the country. Heart pasta dishes such as spaghetti all'matriciana or alla chitarra (square strands of pasta served with a tomato sauce) are served on dinner tables alongside fagioli e cotiche di maiale (stewed beans and pork rind), prosciutto di cinghiale (wild boar ham) and cheeses such as the pecorino d'Abruzzo (the local sheep's cheese) and the burrata (a ball of tangy cheese with a soft buttery center) washed down with a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
